About this site
A free calculator and guide for travellers dealing with Japan’s new tax-free refund method. Independent, run by one person, and built so that nothing you type ever leaves your device.
Who runs it
An individual based in Japan who follows the tax-free rules closely and can check airports and shops in person. This site is not affiliated with the Japanese government, the Japan Tourism Agency, the National Tax Agency, Japan Customs, any airport, any retailer or any refund operator.
How the information is checked
- Every rule on this site traces to an official source: the Japan Tourism Agency’s pages and traveller FAQ, the National Tax Agency’s Q&A, and Japan Customs. They are listed on the Sources page.
- Airport terminal locations are only stated when an official page or document confirms them. Otherwise the page gives the common procedure and links to the airport’s own information.
- Retailer fees and refund methods are quoted from the retailer’s own pages, with the date they were checked. Where nothing has been published, the page says so rather than guessing.
- After 1 November 2026 the airport pages will be updated from in-person visits as well.
What this site does not do
- It does not process refunds or check the status of a refund. Only the shop or its refund operator can.
- It has no accounts, no email list and no tracking cookies. The calculator saves your receipts in your own browser only.
- It does not guarantee any refund amount. Fees and payout methods are set by each shop.
How it is funded
The site may carry clearly marked affiliate links (labelled “PR”) for travel services such as eSIMs or hotels. If you book through one, the site may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Links are placed below the tools, never inside the calculation, and never change what the calculator says.
