Japan tax-free shopping · refund method from 1 Nov 2026
How much of Japan’s consumption tax will you actually get back?
From 1 November 2026 you pay the full price at the shop and claim the tax back at the airport, before you check in your bags. Enter your receipts to see the refund, what a handling fee could take, and your 90-day deadlines.

What changed, in three lines
- You pay the tax first. Tax-free shops sell at the tax-included price. Purchases made up to 31 October 2026 still follow the old system and are settled at the shop.
- Customs checks at the airport, before bag drop. Within 90 days of purchase, scan your passport at a tax-free procedure terminal in the international departure lobby. GREEN means done; RED means show the goods to Customs.
- The shop pays you back, not Customs. By bank transfer, card, app or cash at the port, through the shop or a refund operator it uses, sometimes minus a handling fee.
